GROUND IS BROKEN TO MAKE WAY FOR NEW MULTI-PURPOSE ADDITION AT MIRIAM SCHOOL
Miriam Foundation-supported school serves St. Louis-area children with multiple learning disabilities
St. Louis – June 22, 2010 – With the assistance of several students of the Miriam School and the Miriam Learning Center, St. Louis philanthropist Mary Ann Lee turned the first shovel of earth to signal the start of construction of the school's multi-purpose addition.
The school and learning center are operated by the Miriam Foundation which improves the quality of life for children with learning disabilities and their families through innovative and comprehensive programs.
Mrs. Lee, a St. Louis philanthropist and Miriam Foundation Advisory Committee member, has presented the Miriam Foundation with a significant donation that will further the construction of this $2 million facility.
“This facility will provide much needed recreational space for the children we serve both at the school and through the learning center,” said Andrew Thorp, executive director of the Miriam Foundation.
By the spring of 2011, the children of Miriam School and the Miriam Learning Center in Webster Groves will enjoy access to improved physical fitness activities within the new addition thanks in part to a donation by Mrs. Lee. The foundation is continuing to raise funds that will be needed as the project progresses.
Multi-Purpose Addition Ground-breaking event
The building, which is being designed by the architectural firm of Hastings and Chivetta, will be called the Mary Ann Lee Multi-Purpose Addition. The facility is being built by Hensley Construction of St. Louis.
The new building will offer approximately 7,600 square feet of recreational and support space. It will connect to the north side of Miriam School and will have a separate entrance for event access. Designed to complement the existing school building, the addition will include ample windows that will admit natural light, and it will be acoustically treated to address the special needs of the Miriam student population. Bleachers will allow spectators to watch events on the multipurpose 74’ x 42’ court.
The ground-breaking event for the new addition is being especially celebrated as this is the centennial year for the Miriam Foundation. Programs will be held throughout 2010 to celebrate this milestone, culminating in the centennial gala on September 25, 2010.
Miriam School is an innovative educational institution that educates children Pre-K through 8th grade with multiple learning disabilities, attention deficits, speech/language, sensory and/or fine/gross motor delays, allowing students to meet their full learning potential. The Miriam Learning Center offers comprehensive resources for children with average to above average cognitive ability who exhibit a wide range of learning difficulties.
Miriam School and the Miriam Learning Center are located at 501 Bacon Ave. in Webster Groves, MO. More information is available at www.miriamfoundation.org.
